Shopee was Leading E-commerce Visits in Q3 2023
In the continuously evolving digital era, E-Commerce stands out as a highly dynamic sector, showing significant growth in Q3 2023. According to data gathered from SimilarWeb, there are five e-commerce sites in the marketplace category that received the most visits in Indonesia during that period. These sites are Shopee, Tokopedia, Lazada, Blibli, and Bukalapak.
However, the highlight here is how Shopee managed to outshine its competitors. Shopee recorded an average of 216 million monthly visits throughout Q3 2023. This achievement reflects impressive growth, with a surge of approximately 30% compared to the average visits in Q2 2023 (quarter-on-quarter/qoq).
While Shopee experienced rapid growth, its competitors tended to face a decline in their visitor numbers. SimilarWeb data shows that during the same period, Blibli’s average visits increased by about 5% (qoq). On the other hand, Tokopedia experienced a decrease of 9% (qoq), Lazada saw a sharp drop of 30% (qoq), and Bukalapak faced a decrease of 21% (qoq).

Furthermore, according to research from the Katadata Insight Center (KIC) in the report “Beyond the Digital Frontier,” a considerable portion of the Indonesian population remains inactive in using e-commerce services. Only about 33.4% of the total Indonesian population can be considered active e-commerce users. There is also a 17% portion of the population categorized as occasional users, who use e-commerce with lower intensity, while the majority, around 49.6% of the population, falls under the non-e-commerce user category.
This non-user group consists of Indonesians who either lack internet access or have internet access but have yet to utilize e-commerce services. From this data, KIC underscores that an effective business strategy in Indonesia cannot be solely focused on online sales channels.
